General Information

Teaching Interests

Dr. Wohar taught at the University of Miami from 1985-1988 and then moved to the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1988. Professor Wohar retired from UNO in August 2023 as Emeritus Professor. During his tenure at UNO, Professor Mark E. Wohar held the position of UNO CBA Distinguished Professor and Eminent Scholar. He was a visiting professor in the finance department at the University of Loughborough in the UK. He also held a courtesy appointment in the Department of Finance at UNO. He taught a wide variety of courses at both the graduate, undergraduate and executive levels. His teaching interests include macroeconomics, international finance, monetary theory, central bank behavior, money and banking, fiscal theory, forecasting, and econometric and statistical analysis.

Research Interests

Dr. Wohar's areas of research include, Domestic and International Macroeconomics, International Finance, Central Banking, Financial Economics, Financial Institutions, Forecasting, and Applied Time Series Econometrics. He has published over 250 refereed journal articles. Some of his more noteworthy publications have appeared in journals such as the American Economic Review, Economic Journal, Journal of Finance, Journal of International Economics, Economic Inquiry, Journal of Applied Econometrics, Journal of Forecasting, International Journal of Forecasting, Review of Economics and Statistics, and Journal of Money, Credit and Banking. His research has been cited by more than 8500 papers of other authors. He has received many awards for research excellence including: I. UNO Campus Wide--Award for Distinguish Research or Creative Activity (1993) II. First Recipient of the College of Business Administration Research Fellowship Award for distinguished research (March 17, 1994). Awarded a second time the following year (April, 1995) III. Dean's Citation in Recognition of Excellence in Research: Awarded--1995, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2012 and 2013 IV. Appointed the Lucas Professor--May 1995 V. Appointed the Enron Professor (this took the place of the Lucas Professor)--September 1997 and reappointed to the Enron Chair in May 2003. VI. Appointed to position of Eminent Scholar in August 2013. Wohar has served as a referee for over 100 different Journals in the areas of finance and economics. Wohar has presented his research at a number of Universities (both in the US and abroad). Some of the most noteworthy include Kansas State University, Michigan State University, University of New Orleans, University of Notre Dame, Ohio State University, and University of Washington, University of California-San Diego, Southern Methodist University, University of Essex, Cambridge University, University of Wisconsin, University of Warwick, University of Nottingham, University of Durham, Cass Business School-London, University of Kansas, University of California at Davis, and Notre Dame University, University of Melbourne, Deakin University, Monash University, numerous Federal Reserve Banks, among others.

Service Summary

Wohar is one of the associate editors of the Journal of Economics, an Associate Editor of Applied Economics, on the Editorial board of Economic Inquiry, and on the Editor Council of Review of International Economics. Wohar is involved in directing Masters thesis as well. He also serves on a number of college and University committees. As of October 2005 he has passed level I and level II of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exams. He has also passed level I and level II of the Certified Financial Management (CFM) exams and plans on taking the last two levels.
